On a recent trip to Jamaica, I made a brief yet powerful visit to the Roaring River a few minutes Northeast of Savanna-la-Mar.Roaring River runs underground before appearing near the mouth of the Roaring River Cave - a series of limestone caverns with a small mineral spring inside.
The river provides the parish capital with its water supply and it is the most important source of water in Central Westmoreland and the George's Plain.
We were hooked up with our local tour guide thru our Bredren,Hanover Native and well-known “Jamaican Ambassador,” Tyrone Williams. (Give Tyrone a link if you plan on traveling to Jamaica between MoBay & Negril. He is the host with di most! http://sites.google.com/site/tysontimenegril/). Tyrone couldn’t have been matched with a better guide-Dr. Scott-Rastaman/Spiritual Healer/Massage Therapist.
Dr. Scott, hailing from Shrewsbury, the small community that surrounds the Roaring River has been guiding people thru the grounds for over 20 years. Dr. Scott led us thru the beautiful gardens, pointing out native plants and flowers to the area and their many dietary and medicinal uses. He also led us thru the cave one of over three hundred caves in Jamaica. This cave was used as the sleeping quarters of the slaves who worked the sugar cane fields (that are still there today). The slaves also used the caved as an escape route because of the vast tunnels within. It’s hard to verbally articulate the vibration within the cave-especially knowing the history.
Formations made from molten lava and the cold water of the mineral spring located under the cave are curiously mysterious. Dr. Scott pointed out formations resembling The Lion of Judah and Bob Marley. The most spectacular sight for InI was the opening at the top of the cave that was shaped like Africa-the Motherland. I couldn’t bring myself to photograph certain parts of the cave- the spiritual vibration was so overwhelming it seemed disrespectful.
Next was the healing bath. Dr. Scott carefully leads you to the spring. It’s dark and the water is very cold-yet so rejuvenating and invigorating. I received healing herbs and a therapeutic massage. I was first scrubbed down with dried minerals from the cave while Dr. Scott prayed over each of my limbs-as I carefully watched. The healing energy was very high and I could feel energy levels slowly increase. There are many natural minerals such as sulfur and crystals that can be used for a soothing/healing bath. Many of the members of the community go into the cave to get healing and to pray.
After a cool soak, it was time for the Ital jacuzzi! I cautiously made my way through the pitch black hole in the side of the cave with verbal instruction from the Doctor (who knows every nook and rock in the cave). Upon entering the power of the water took my breath away. The water was stronger than any jet on any jacuzzi I have ever been in. If you didn’t hold on and brace yourself, you would be forcefully pushed into the rocks. While inside, the pure water rushing over every part of my body felt like an immediate purification. After a few minutes your eyes adjusted to the extreme darkness and there was a bit of a glow. The Ital jacuzzi was in a word-AMAZING.
I emerged from the cave feeling brand new. Energy was cleared and balanced. We thanked the Doc and made our way back to Negril feeling completely energized.I wanted to share this story with you in the “Health Corner” because this was a truly healing experience. If you visit western Jamaica, I highly recommend this spot. Again, words do no justice- Who feels it knows it.
