In an interview this summer during his tour in the U.S., singer/songwriter Duane Stephenson said that a lot of fans-lured to his concerts by recent popular reggae anthems like "Ghetto Pain" and one of the best records of the year "Cottage In Negril" thought the Duane's old songs were actually new ones. On Duane Stephenson's latest album, "Black Gold," Duane makes a strong bid to please longtime fans as well as the recently converted.
The current single "Black Gold" has the uplift and bombast to make a strong stand at radio; by contrast, Duane Stephenson may have the ticket to pleasing everyone all of the time. Duane Stephenson is a singer with beautiful but rough, edged vocals, who certainly has the potential to follow in the footsteps of the great Jimmy Cliff, some have said he needs a more balanced (second) album and, of course, an international smash hit but I think he's on the right track. Holding firm to the culture and foundation of live instrumentation of reggae music.
